Firm wins Quo Warranto For Church Board of Trustees Against Pastor

Bradley L. Drell and B. Gene Taylor, III successfully represented the Board of Trustees of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in obtaining a favorable ruling on a writ of quo warranto declaring that Ameal Jones, Sr., was not duly re-elected as pastor in May, 2011, following Jones’ termination in November, 2010.  The Mt. Zion controversy received a great deal of local media attention over the last year and has encompassed eight different lawsuits.

The two day trial on August 17 - 18, 2011, which included a hearing on the recusal of Judge Mary Doggett, occurred before a packed courtroom of church members in the Ninth Judicial District Court in Alexandria.  The case involved legal issues regarding the First Amendment and Louisiana corporate law .  The case was tried only forty three days after it was filed. Judge Doggett’s ruling was released on September 14, 2011.
